11 Commandments For Gen Y Job Seekers

Get some advice from the people who are working in the fields that interest you. You could look online for interviews or interview some of these people yourself. Can you relate to these individuals or see yourself in a similar work situation?

Set up keyword news alerts. Sign up for news alerts (they’re free from Google or Yahoo) containing the name of any company where you hope to interview. This means you’ll be the very first to know about new products, new management and new business opportunities-invaluable knowledge when you want to stand out as the must-hire job applicant.

(In fact, in case you haven’t noticed, I’m a big advocate of HIRING SOMEONE – ME(!) – to help you with your materials and your search so you know you are starting way ahead of the pack. Save your time, money and sanity!) Yes, take a break, but not a 3-week break! Don’t be a job seeker-a-holic, but don’t step out of the frey if you want to be competitive in today’s tough economic times.

The key things to remember would be to stay motivated and to not lose sight of the end goal at hand; to graduate successfully with a GPA to be satisfied with.

The companies firmly entrenched in the space don’t exactly roll out a doormat for new competitors. When you begin to show some of the executives in the industry that you are a threat to their ability to still afford that condo in Miami while paying for the twins’ college, it tends to anger them.

Trina Thompson sued her college because she couldn’t get a job after graduation. She graduated with a 2.7 gpa, and after 3 months she had not yet landed a job during a terrible recession. So she blamed the school’s career center for not procuring her dream job for her.
